Free Truck Wash
The names have been changed to protect the innocent. Jamie and were off to detail a tractor trailer, we arrived bright and early and started washing the truck 70 feet of it 2 1/2 hours later it started to rain so we asked if it could be put in the bay to detail it and only to find out that that was the wrong truck, guess i should have checked in first "my bad" we did get the other one done by the end of the day though,

key's
Always have have special place to keep the customers keys, One afternoon my worker and I I won't mention any names, so your safe Jean. anyway i had this old chevy utility truck, it was nicknamed "the albatross" (ugly white bird) Jean was detailing the volvo at the end of the drive way while I was cleaning the driveway, so when we wee finished we could n't find the keys to the car , we searched for hours and hours we were just getting ready to call a locksmith when it just came to me to look behind the hose real tah dah there they were Jean had laid the keys on the side of the truck and while the pressure washer was running they vibrated up hill and fell behind the hose reel.so always have a place for there keys or never give them to Jean

You get what you pay for!!1
If your wanting a $50 Detail job your gonna get one makes sure you know what they are doing for the money. When I quote a price a lot of the customer will say it's to high they used to have it done for $50 but there out of business, big surprise. I make sure the customers know what they are getting
we clay bar, polish and wax or seal the car we do a minimum of three steps. Which obviously takes more time and chemicals. so the key thing is to educate the customer.

Make Friend from customers not customers from friends
I learned a long time ago not to make customers out of friend but you can make friends out of customers, I would rather do friends cars for free (needless to say I don't have many friends)

Anybody can Detail a black Car!!!!
Just Kidding Black cars are hard to get the best result from, but I think one of best comment I have ever received, was when I detail a white Bentley that was going to a high end auction and the comments that were that the car "looked like a glass of milk" I thought that was pretty cool..

Buffers
I think the best buffer for the money is the Cyclo dual head, I've used orbitals and High Speeds I think with some practice you can do the same quality job with this machine as the high speed buffer without damaging the paint

How did you Get Started In The Detailing Business
1987 I was looking for a job had a little money, and I answered an ad in the newspaper,"make 10-15 dollars an hour washing cars" so I thought that was great so when i went to meet them i found out it was a franchise deal for $3000 I got and 18 pound GEM buffer, towels ,hose, some chemicals, business cards and a license. For me it paid off I got a lot of great contacts, some that are still customers to this day.
SEMI-Tough
We always do this race team's tractor trailer, Once a year when they're down south for racing, And every time they had a different truck/trailer. So the driver calls me up and asked us to come detail the truck, but it called for rain, So the driver said no problem if it rains we'll put it in the garage (they have a garage big enough just to store the truck). so we got there bright and early, and there is a different truck there as usual, so we just started doing our washing and prepping the 70 foot rig, 2 hours later it started to rain so we ask to have it put in the garage, "theres no room in there" they said the other truck is in there.WHAT!!! yep we washed the wrong truck they have 2 now, I can laugh about it now but losing 2 hours made for a long day. Please share any similar stories you may have.

13 year old Entrepreneur
Remember the first time you waxed a car and made money, I do, it was my Neighbor's 1972 Ford LTD gold 2 door, this was like 1975, with a can of KIT wax, (we only had that and turtle wax couldn't afford blue coral) and bottle of Joy dish washing liquid( don't think there was even anything like a car wash soap back then or it was cheaper to take my moms under the sink) oh yeah and my mom's SOS pads to clean the white walls ( I had a real low over head starting out )
I even remember using mop n glo, or pledge to shine the tires ( my grandmother wasn't to happy with me taking hers, so I set out with a bucket a rag and a towel I started to clean my first car for money yes sir I was in the big time I spent all day on this car, washed waxed it polished the chrome, cleaned the windows, and sweep the car out with a high tech whisk broom,
I think I made a whopping $10 on this job man I was rich, since I had no overhead everything was my mom's and grandma's it was all profit. Please share your similar experiences.
